When to hire a contractor or DIY

DIY might cost you in time, money, and patience…

Do-it-yourself (DIY) jobs are a popular trend right now in the home improvement industry.
Thanks in big part to Tik-Tok and YouTube, many people are taking on remodeling projects, plumbing, and electrical work. We are not here to discourage you but before you start swinging a hammer, ask yourself a few questions:

-      Are you persistent? Are you patient?

-      Once you start a project, do you tend to finish it?

-      Do you have the time required to complete the project?

-      Always double or triple the time you estimated you will need for a project.

-      Are you prepared for extra stress?

-      Do you have the proper installation instructions from the manufacturer for the project?

-      Are you familiar with any building or permits you might need?

-      Do you have a backup plan for if something goes wrong?

-      Do you have the proper tools and materials needed?

-      Will you be happy with the outcome?

-      If you are not happy with the outcome, can you afford to have the work repaired?

If you answered yes to 8 or more of these questions, you might attempt a DIY project. But before you run for the nearest hardware store, revisit those questions you marked "No," and carefully consider the potential problems you will face in those areas if you proceed with the project.

Finding the right contractor can be stressful.

The best way to find qualified, professional help is through word-of-mouth referrals.
Local remodelers or contractors are an excellent way to find a professional.

Common sources for qualified remodelers or contractors include:

  • Relatives, friends, and neighbors

  • Business colleagues and co-workers

  • Lenders

  • Real estate agents

  • Local material suppliers (hardware stores, garden centers, etc.)

Find the right contractor for you

When looking for a professional contractor, look locally.

Here are 7 tips for finding the best contractor or remodeler for your project:

1.    Stay in your local area

When looking for a contractor, look for a business in your community and surrounding area. Local businesses are compelled to perform quality work to survive.

2.    Follow local building codes and permits

Another advantage of hiring a local professional is that they know the building code and permit requirements for your area. Building codes vary widely from city to city and year to year.  Most structural work or footprint expansions require permits. It is essential to check these requirements before starting any project and failing to do so can result in hefty fines, demolished work, and expensive repairs.

If a project is completed without the proper permits, you may be required to pay retroactively when it comes time to sell your home.

3.    Check for licenses and insurance

Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded, and/or insured. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets all requirements. Most states require a contractor to carry worker’s compensation, property damage, and personal liability insurance. Ask for a copy of their license and insurance certificate to make sure that it is current.

4.    Check for violations

Check with your Consumer Affairs Office and the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractor.

5. Compare estimates with the same scope and quality of work

When requesting estimates from contractors or remodelers, make sure they are all using the same scope and quality of work. Beware of any estimates that are substantially lower than the others.

6. BE INFORMED and heard

A good remodeling professional educates clients on green remodeling, universal design, lead safety, new products, building techniques, and trends. Make sure you’re hiring someone who has knowledge and expertise relevant to the remodeling industry. Make sure you communicate your needs, budget, and goals with your contractor.

7. Always Check References

Don’t rely on a contractor’s personality or demeanor. If a professional does not offer references, ask for them and follow up with a site visit or phone call.
